Trust us: You want to seek out stylist Ashley Geesaman, who has the rare ability to sculpt a cut that still earns compliments months after an appointment. From inside this converted garage (with a tall, eye-catching Photinia tree planted in the middle), Geesaman works on wet hair to create the desired length, then blow-dries and often texturizes edges "to soften the cut and make it look really feminine," she says. Stop by on a warm day and staffers will likely throw open the wide glass door in the front to let in the sunshine.

Owner Kelly Gorsuch was once a fashion stylist, and it shows--from the furniture he designed out of reclaimed wood to the tree growing in a clawfoot bathtub. We hear the most buzz about this salon, with recommendations for almost every stylist. Young women with longish locks particularly like the skillful cuts of Liana Phillips, Mimi Lockard, and Vivian Cooper. Other favorites include Mike Charland, Nate Shearer, Soel Hassani, Ashley Geesaman, and colorist Jen Phillips. Johnny Wright wields his scissors here when he's not traveling with the First Lady.

The brassy remains of our at-home dye job screamed "box" instead of "beach," so we humbly asked Durbin to get our color back on track. She prescribed a trio of highlights in chocolate, amber, and toffee to replace the bronze tones and bulk up our fine brown strands. We liked the concept in theory but warned her that golden hues have a nasty habit of turning coppery on us when we step outdoors. She listened carefully, then applied the lightest shades to only the undersides of our hair, ingeniously guarding them against the sun. The flickers of warmth peeked out with every head turn, and now our hair just screams "gorgeous."

Fans also love the fabulous scented Oribe products used to wash and condition. Mimi Lockard and Tyler Larish give skillful cuts; for color, Kerry Durbin is the name to ask for. We considered ourselves multitalented — until we met Gorsuch. His new salon is decorated with cool furniture he designed himself from fallen timber, including an oversize wood-framed mirror that's suspended like a tire swing from the rafters. We hoped that he was equally adept with the scissors as we lamented our matronly, earlength hair. He sliced sharp angles to give it a more youthful look, then styled our hair using a diffuser and the salon's own saltwater concoction. We left with a short, wavy style that was part punk, part sophisticated, and exactly what we were after.
