We considered ourselves multitalented — until we met Gorsuch. His new salon is decorated with cool furniture he designed himself from fallen timber, including an oversize wood-framed mirror that's suspended like a tire swing from the rafters. We hoped that he was equally adept with the scissors as we lamented our matronly, earlength hair. He sliced sharp angles to give it a more youthful look, then styled our hair using a diffuser and the salon's own saltwater concoction. We left with a short, wavy style that was part punk, part sophisticated, and exactly what we were after.

With the feel of a SoHo loft — there's a tree growing in a clawfoot bathtub — this Logan Circle salon has "it" girls in its sway with stylish, long-layered cuts. Fans also love the fabulous scented Oribe products used to wash and condition. Mimi Lockard and Tyler Larish give skillful cuts; for color, Kerry Durbin is the name to ask for. Johnny Wright does First Lady Michelle Obama's hair. Cut: $60 and up for men, $75 and up for women. Color: $75 and up.

The brassy remains of our at-home dye job screamed "box" instead of "beach," so we humbly asked Durbin to get our color back on track. She prescribed a trio of highlights in chocolate, amber, and toffee to replace the bronze tones and bulk up our fine brown strands. We liked the concept in theory but warned her that golden hues have a nasty habit of turning coppery on us when we step outdoors. She listened carefully, then applied the lightest shades to only the undersides of our hair, ingeniously guarding them against the sun. The flickers of warmth peeked out with every head turn, and now our hair just screams "gorgeous."
